Music Kids: What to do Next!

As each Music Kids session draws to a close, many parents and caregivers wonder what the next best step is for their little one.

Here is some information to help you decide:

6-24 Months

If your 6-24-month-old is 2 years old by the next session, they may move into our 2-year-old class. At age 2, our curriculum incorporates songs and activities that reinforce developmental milestones such as counting, identifying colours, sharing and taking turns. Critical listening skills are developed through songs with actions that highlight the interpretation of sound - high and low/ loud and soft. Activities that develop fine motor skills are introduced such as finger action songs. The use of mallets is also introduced with our instruments at this age.

2 Year Olds

If your 2-year-old is turning 3 years old by the next session, they may move into our 3&4-year-old class. This parent-free class may be your child’s first introduction to social independence.

Ages 3-5

At ages 3 and 4, children learn more about rhythms, both visual and aural recognition of rhythms and creating and performing rhythmic notes and patterns. Children develop their musical vocabulary while learning the terminology for loud and soft (forte and piano) and musical tempi. Critical listening skills are further enhanced through ear training songs and activities.

If your child is 4 years of age, it is recommended that they participate in at least one session of the 3&4 year old classes before moving into the age 4&5 year old class.

Note reading is highlighted in our 4&5-year-old class. In this class the C major scale is introduced using letter names and solfege (do, re, mi). Children read music, sing and perform using handbells and xylophones and follow the conducting of their teacher. This class sets the foundation to prepare children for private lessons in any instrument.

For parents of older preschoolers: Music Kids Private Lessons

We offer year-round Music Kids private lessons to children ages 4 and 5. These 30-minute sessions incorporate the fundamentals of music study with the fun of the Music Kids curriculum. This is a fantastic introduction for children who are at a pre-reading stage and are ready to try a private lesson. Introductory rhythm and note reading is taught through singing, rhythms, games, movement and playing the piano.
